How we chose
We checked the official project pages for free access, gameplay features and download routes on October 15, 2026. These recommendations reflect the practical differences below. This is a documentation-based comparison, not measured performance testing across PCs. Server populations and package sizes change.
1. Xonotic: fast arena combat
Xonotic suits players who enjoy learning movement, switching weapons for different situations and controlling map pickups. Modes including Deathmatch and Capture the Flag provide repeatable matches rather than a long story campaign.
Start against bots to adjust sensitivity and learn routes before joining public servers. The official package contains the game, so you do not need to buy Quake or another base title. Its appeal is the room to improve aim, timing and movement together.

2. OpenArena: classic rules and bot practice
OpenArena offers recognizable arena modes, including Free For All, Capture the Flag and Domination. Bot matches let you learn weapon locations and maps without waiting for other players to connect.
The technology and public release are older than those of many contemporary shooters. Read the official full-package and patch instructions instead of assuming an old mirror has everything you need. Simple graphics do not automatically guarantee compatibility with every modern computer.

3. Red Eclipse 2: parkour and movement variety
Red Eclipse 2 makes movement part of the fight through parkour, impulse boosts and dashing. Match mutators change the rules, while cooperative editing provides a reason for mapmakers to explore it.
Choose it for that movement system rather than expecting the same competitive ecosystem as a large commercial shooter. The project highlights Windows and Linux downloads; check its current download page for other platforms and build requirements.

4. Unvanquished: team strategy and building
Unvanquished combines first-person combat with team strategy. Humans and evolving aliens have different tools, and the position and defense of structures matter alongside shooting.
A useful first session teaches you what the team needs: defending a position, supporting construction or attacking enemy infrastructure. Look for community guidance and available servers before inviting friends. It rewards understanding a team role, not just winning individual encounters.

5. OpenSpades: a battlefield you can change
OpenSpades is a client for a free online voxel shooter with destructible terrain. Cover, routes and structures can change during a match, giving the landscape a practical role in combat.
Treat it as a community-server choice. Read the current release notes and make sure the server you want supports your client. Not every game or client using the Ace of Spades name is interchangeable.

6. Alien Arena: science-fiction arenas and CTF
Alien Arena offers deathmatch, Capture the Flag and single-player bot options. That makes it another place to practice without waiting for a full human lobby before trying online matches.
The official site lists current Windows installation routes, Linux options and player activity. Use current sources: the project documents connection and stability issues in older releases. Check the server browser at the time you plan to play rather than relying on an article to promise a busy lobby.

Which games suit an older PC?
Compare actual requirements before choosing. Xonotic's official download page currently specifies at least 4 GB RAM and hardware-accelerated OpenGL 2.1. Its main ZIP is listed at 1,182 MiB; extract it and run the appropriate executable.
OpenSpades' published minimum requirements include a 1 GHz dual-core CPU, 1 GB RAM and 512 MB video memory, with higher recommended specifications. These are project figures, not NeonRoof benchmarks. Current OS compatibility, drivers, resolution and the map still matter.
Start with conservative graphics settings and a local practice session when available. Check performance on your own PC before committing an evening with friends.
