If you have room for only one more shooter on your PC, pick AssaultCube for compact maps and quick firefights. Pick Cube 2: Sauerbraten if you want a bigger old-school arena game that also lets you build maps with other players. Both are free, both have multiplayer, and neither asks you to learn a battle pass before your first match.

AssaultCube: get in, find a fight, play another round

AssaultCube on NeonRoof is the one I would hand to a friend with an older laptop. Its maps keep players close enough that a quiet match rarely stays quiet for long. The guns feel direct, the rounds move quickly, and team modes give you something to do beyond chasing a score. It is an arcade shooter, not a military simulation, even though its settings and weapons look more grounded than Sauerbraten's.

The official project describes a small download, modest hardware requirements, bot play, and modes including deathmatch and capture the flag. That makes it a sensible first stop if you want to try a free FPS without committing a lot of disk space. Check the current package and platform notes on the official AssaultCube site before installing.

There is more here than point-and-shoot matches. AssaultCube has an in-game map editor and cooperative editing, too. That matters because it is easy to hear “Sauerbraten has an editor” and assume AssaultCube does not. The real difference is where each game puts the emphasis when you sit down to play.

Cube 2: Sauerbraten on NeonRoof has a different pull. You can play single-player or multiplayer FPS modes, but the game is also famous for letting people change the map while they are in it. The official site calls out cooperative, in-game geometry editing alongside its old-school deathmatch play. It feels as much like a place to tinker as a place to compete.

That makes it the more interesting choice if your favorite question after a match is “What if this room connected to that one?” It also gives a curious indie developer a hands-on look at how a playable space can evolve in real time. Do not mistake that for a full modern game engine; the fun is seeing this particular shooter's world become editable under your feet.

The tradeoff is that Sauerbraten is a much larger download than AssaultCube. If your connection or storage is tight, start with AssaultCube. If you want the map-making side as much as the shooting, go with Sauerbraten. The Cube 2 project site has the current official build and documentation.

Which one should you download first?

  • For quick matches on modest hardware: AssaultCube.
  • For old-school arena play plus collaborative map editing: Cube 2: Sauerbraten.
  • For a longer evening: try both. The contrast is more interesting than declaring one the winner.

If neither quite scratches the itch, read our six free FPS games worth playing or browse the complete NeonRoof FPS catalog. The NeonRoof Discord is there if you want people to play with or have a better recommendation.
